Stevie Ray Vaughan Statue Town Lake

I’ve been listening to and thinking about Stevie Ray Vaughan quite a bit lately. There was a great article in the Austin Chronicle a couple months ago about some recovered early recordings from 1978 which kicked off yet another rediscovery of SRV for me. I’ve got a few live recordings but this show is the best live Stevie Ray that I have in my collection. It will blow your mind if you are a big Stevie Ray fan and turn you into a fan if you aren’t. The Little Wing is bone chilling. I can’t imagine the energy in the air on that summer night at Red Rocks when Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble blew the place away.

If you’d like a lossless copy, you can download it FLAC here.

Drew Emmitt Band

Drew Emmitt PhotographI love Drew Emmitt! I think he was one of the key ingredients to Leftover Salmon. My favorite songs that they played were the ones that he sang. In addition to being a great singer, he’s a killer mandolin picker. I wrote about Vince Herman’s post Leftover Salmon carreer here and I’m happy to see his former band mate is also alive and kickin. I found a killer Drew Emmitt band show in the archive that I’d like to share:

Derek Trucks Band Gear Stolen

Derek Trucks Band Photograph

All those bad apples out there trying to ruin it for everybody else really make my skin boil. Some selfish heartless bastard stole most of Derek Trucks Bands’ gear in Georgia last Thursday while Trucks was playing a show in New York with the Allman Brothers Band. Here is the official statement from derektrucks.com:

DTB Gear Stolen
As many of you already know, the band’s trailer was stolen last Thursday night with all of our stage gear. We really appreciate everyone’s concern and support. The gear was insured so we’re not looking for donations, just asking for everyone to keep an eye out for the gear in their local communities and online since many items were unique and irreplaceable. Since the trailer was stolen in Atlanta it would be helpful if fans/friends in the southeast would contact their local music stores that buy used gear and give them the list below to keep an eye out. Everyone else should keep an eye on websites that deal in vintage gear. Thanks again for your concern.Key items to keep an eye out for:Pearl 5-piece Drum Kit (Black) (SN# 652623, 642341, 83233, 6526231, 652163)Fender Super Reverb Combo Amp

I really hope they catch the fools that did that.

If you haven’t picked up a copy of the new album Songlines yet, do yourself a favor and grab that one ASAP. Its the best album of 2006! Or better yet, go see Derek Trucks Band live:

The Gorge AmpitheaterSasquatch Festival 2006 looks like one of the coolest festivals happening this summer. It takes place at one of the most magical music venues on this planet, the Gorge Ampitheater which is near the Columbia River in central Washington (about three hours southeast of Seattle). Sasquatch festival takes place over the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of memorial weekend. The lineup this year is phenomenal! This is one to see for sure if you can swing it!

Jerry Garcia Estate Auction On eBay

Posted by Matt on Feb 22, 2006 in flac, live, lossless, mp3, music, stream

Jerry Garcia PhotoOver 50 items from the Jerry Garcia estate will be auctioned on eBay from February 20 to February 27. The items include appliances, bathroom fixtures, kitchen fixtures, and furniture that were in Jerry Garcia’s Nicasio, California house when purchased by Henry Koltys in 1997. All of the proceeds for the auction will go to The Sophia Foundation which is a non profit organization advocating for children that are victims of divorce. What a cool way to own a piece musical history and help out a great organization in the process! If you were wondering what I want for my birthday (not till May, but you can start shopping now) I will take the mail box! Jerry was such an amazing musician whose influence will reach far and deep for many many years to come.
Here is the info from the listing:

By the sale of these items, no disrespect is intended towards the memory of Jerry or his family. This auction and the Sophia Foundation are not affiliated with nor endorsed by either the Jerry Garcia Estate or the Grateful Dead. The Jerry Garcia Estate and the Sophia Foundation have signed a settlement agreement whereby this charity auction may proceed without interruption.

To view photos of the auction items and details, click Favorite Links below: Sophia Foundation — Photos and Details or go to www.sophia-foundation.org

Jerry owned this house from 1993-1995 and in 1997 the new owner removed fixtures and cabinets for a charity auction. The Sophia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to benefit children and families during separation or divorce. Auction proceeds will enable Sophia to donate a free version of KidsFirst! custody agreement and parenting plan software to parents in need. InCap Corporation has donated licenses of KidsFirst! software to Sophia for this use. www.kids-first.com and www.incap.com.

Over fifty interesting fixtures and cabinets removed from Garcia’s last home will be auctioned from Monday, February 20 to February 27. The goal is to raise much-needed funds intended to benefit millions of children each year. Since Sophia is a non-profit, the amount paid in excess of the value estimated by the foundation may be tax deductible depending on the successful bidder’s personal tax situation.Check with your tax professional to be sure.To authenticate the fixtures and cabinets, successful bidders will receive a copy of the deeds of sale to Jerry Garcia and from the Garcia Estate along with a signed declaration by the former owner of the house verifying the items were removed from the house.

And as always for your listening pleasure, the Pure Jerry Sampler:

I just finished listening to Phil Lesh and Friends at the Beacon Theater on February 12, 2006 and am blown away as usual. Phil never ceases to reach deep into his bag of tricks and deliver the goods! The show features Trey Anastasio and Joan Osborne and falls nowhere short of musicle bliss! I like Trey because he’s got such a killer signature style which adapts quite well to Grateful Dead music. I also love Joan Osbourne’s soulful, bluesy voice…the lady has mad chops! I also love Rob Barraco (on keys) who’s been rocking out with Phil for a couple tours now as well as new guitarist Larry Campbell(of Bob Dylan fame) and drummer Jeff Sipe. One thing that sort bums me out about Phil and Friends is the parting of ways with guitarist Jimmy Herring. Jimmy had such a clean smooth style that just flowed beautifully with Grateful Dead music.

If you get confused listen to the music play!

Jazzfest 2006

Posted by Matt on Feb 15, 2006 in festival, lossless, music, shn, stream

Jazzfest 2006 PosterThe New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2006 lineup was announced today. Its so great to hear that the tradition is continuing. The lineup this year is incredible. I think that many musicians have opted to play to show their support for carrying on the Jazzfest tradition in wake of Katrina. Some of the noteable acts include Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews Band, Elvis Costello and Ani DiFranco and many more. You can check out the complete lineup here.
Here is an exerpt the official press release:

New Orleans, LA (February 15, 2006)—Heralding the comeback of New Orleans music and culture, organizers of the 2006 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell today announced a music lineup filled with hundreds of New Orleans’ most beloved musicians, an array of superstars who have delivered some of the Festival’s most thrilling performances, and major artists making their Jazz Fest debuts at the first post-Katrina event on April 28-30 and May 5-7.

The Vince Herman Trio

Posted by Matt on Feb 15, 2006 in acoustic, bluegrass, flac, live, lossless, mp3, music, stream

Vince HermanI miss Leftover Salmon, those guys were such a great slamgrass band! Their live performances were so much fun and pumped full of energy. I think that a huge ingredient in LoS polyethnic cajun slamgrass was frontman Vince Herman. The guy can truly captivate an audience and get the party started. I’ve seen many Leftover Salmon shows where everyone in the crowd was going completely nutty, dancing and hollering and a hooting!

Well, I’m glad to see the void is being filled with Vince Herman performing both solo and in various formations. This past fall, Vince played some gigs with bass virtuoso Rob Wasserman on the Spirit of Guthrie tour. Now, Vince is playing gigs with Randy Crouch and Cliff Starbuck as the Vince Herman Trio. I got my ears on an excellent Vince Herman Trio show from the Fox Theater in Boulder Colorado on January 5, 2006. This is a must listen for all you slamgrass fans out there! Welcome back Vince, and thanks for all the great times!

I just listened to one of the best Little Feat live performances that I’ve come across. This show comes from Telluride Bluegrass Festival 1988. Little Feat is in tip top shape for this performance with newly added Craig Fuller on vocals. Other highlights include Sam Bush and Washboard Leo on Cajun Girl. You can stream or download this show off the live music archive. I love the performance Dixie Chicken from this show. I highly recommend a listen! Little Feat are currently touring.
